Vancouver Island Baby Fair Photo Contest

Vancouver Island Baby Fair Photo Contest

The Photo Contest at the Vancouver Island Baby fair has been a popular attraction since 2007. Each year we fundraise and highlight an organization that helps families in our community. This year we raised over $2000 for our sponsored charity, the Y Young Moms Program.

Congratulations to the families of Jalen (Under 2 category) and Anais (2-6 category) who were chosen to be our 2017 winners! Each family wins a prize package including a portrait session & prints valued at approximately $700 with PR Photo Creations. Jalen will go on to be the poster child of the 2018 Vancouver Island Baby Fair.

The Y Young Moms Program offers safe, affordable, transitional housing for 8 young mothers (aged 16-29) and their child under the age of 5. Too often young parents struggle with the basic necessity of providing a safe place to live for their children. Their program offers an opportunity to live free of violence to young woman and children, and builds a sense of community within the program where mothers and children feel safe, supported, valued, and respected. Young mothers who have struggled with homelessness, poverty, and violence have the opportunity to move forward and create a better future for themselves and their children through parenting support, individual counselling, advocacy, and educational groups on a variety of topics. Counsellors provide flexible, individualized support to women working towards their goals including parenting, schooling or employment, emotional and physical wellness, and reconnecting with their community. Young women retain their independence in their suites while building resilience, skills and strengths in a community living environment to transition successfully to independent living. As each of our families becomes connected with the resources they need to achieve their goals, the program strives to increase feelings of community and social support while in the program, creating community connections that will foster ongoing support and inclusion.

Committed to serving Victoria's young parent community, the program also offers a variety of programming that is accessible both to resident moms and the community. Their weekly free young parent drop-in runs on Thursdays from 10-noon, with a healthy breakfast, playroom for the little ones, and a parent and child craft project. They also offer Food Skills for Families, Mother Goose, Nobody's Perfect, Triple P, and a variety of fun and interactive workshops for our resident and community parents throughout the year.
