4:00pm - Self Care beyond birth
The first few weeks after the baby is born can be a challenging and exhausting time. Our society is not set up to foster support and care for mothers during what other cultures appropriately refer to as the "lay-in period."

In this informative talk, we face the age old question: If you don't put your mask on first, how can you care for others? Women will learn how to set up a support network, establish a routine that fosters self-care, learn some nourishing yoga and nutrition tips, come to understand the link between birth hormones and postpartum depression and practice the skill of asking for help. Partners will also learn some valuable tools that will contribute to mama's well being so that she feels supported in this process. With the help of Kusuma Tiffany, Certified Doula, Certified Holistic Nutritionst and Yoga Instructor, you'll explore some new perspectives to help you to feel great about being off your feet in no time.

Are you a parent (or soon-to-be parent) who sometimes feels overwhelmed by the busy, fast pace of life? Have you noticed that the levels of stress in children seems to be increasing as well? Mindfulness practices help to cultivate moment-to-moment, non-judgemental awareness in our day-to-day lives. Join Stephanie Curran for a discussion on how to develop and bring helpful mindfulness tools into the everyday moments of life, at work and in your home, as well as to the experience of pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum.

2:00pm - The underlying cause of the Mommy Tummy
A recent study found that DRA (or Diastasis Recti Abdominis) is present in 100% of pregnant women at 35-weeks gestation. Another study found a prevalence of DRA of 33.1% at gestation week 21, 60% at 6-weeks postpartum, 45.4% at 6-months postpartum, and 32.6% at 12-months postpartum.

Can you prevent it? Does it cause low back or pelvic pain? How do you rehabilitate it? To tell you the truth, there is little high quality research in this area and a LOT of speculation in the rehabilitation world. There is quite a range of information and treatment for DRA and core abdominals given from health professionals from the over-simplification of core training to the excessively cautious. Attend this talk to get a taste of a realistic understanding of the assessment, treatment and goals of DRA rehabilitation.

Laura Werner has been practicing as a Registered Physiotherapist with specific training in the management and treatment of pelvic floor, abdominal, uro-gynecological and lumbopelvic dysfunctions since 2010.
